Bird of the Month: an RBS in NW3

My nomination for Bird of the Month for August is Red-backed Shrike — a species that was once a regular breeder in the London area but is now only a scarce passage migrant. A juvenile on Parliament Hill for most of the day on 22nd August was a great draw for birders in the Hampstead Heath area. Sadly, it had gone by the next morning.

An alternative contender for the Bird-of-the-Month accolade was Bee-eater, since seven birds were in Bayford (Hertfordshire) late on the 16th and early on the 17th. These were almost certainly the celebrity birds that between them excavated three nest holes in a Nottinghamshire quarry in June but failed to raise any young to maturity. It seems that, after abandoning the nest site on 4th August, they stopped off for a Bayford B&B on the way to their wintering grounds in tropical Africa. Perhaps they’ll return next year.

Another possible BotM was the Night Heron — or Black-crowned Night-heron, if you must — that spent a day on Wandsworth Common on the 27th. However, even though this species is seen increasingly frequently in England, and even bred here this year for the first time (at Somerset’s Westhay Moor nature reserve), some seasoned cynics suspect that the SW11 specimen may not have been truly wild.

(The first ever British record of this rare vagrant was a bird shot somewhere in the London area in 1782. Since then there have been fewer than 20 accepted London records — most recently a first-summer bird that spent a day at Stockers Lake in June 2011, a juvenile (the same individual?) flushed at Grays a month later, and a bird seen flying over Hampton in July 2012.)

What else?

What else? Well, notable relatives of Wandsworth’s Night Heron included a Cattle Egret at Beddington Farmlands (14th), a Great White Egret at Wraysbury GP (26th) and a White Stork over Beckenham (26th). Among other species encountered just once in August were a Great Skua over Stockers Lake (21st), a Turtle Dove in the Rainham Marshes car park (24th), a Quail calling at Sewardstone (25th), two Honey Buzzard circling over the London Wetland Centre before moving off in opposite directions (25th), and a Guillemot flying downriver past Purfleet (30th).

A wodge of waders and a load of larids

Partial drainage of the Staines Reservoir south basin increased its appeal for waders this month. The star attraction was a juvenile Pectoral Sandpiper first seen on the 30th and happy to stay on into September. Other notable waders at Staines and other wetland sites included Grey Plover, Bar-tailed Godwit, Little Stint, Temminck’s Stint, Ruff, Spotted Redshank and Wood Sandpiper.

London’s larid sightings included a Sabine’s Gull at Beddington Farmlands (9th), a Kittiwake near the Thames Barrier (10th), one or two Little Gull at Staines Reservoir (several dates) and assorted Black Tern, Sandwich Tern and Arctic Tern at various sites.

Passerine passage migrants included a Wood Warbler at Brent Reservoir (5th), a few Pied Flycatcher here and there, and plenty of Tree Pipit, Yellow Wagtail, Common Redstart, Whinchat, Wheatear and Spotted Flycatcher. And, since John Archer is the only birder who has bothered to upload any images to the wiki this month, I am happy to illustrate my round-up with his photograph of a juvenile Wheatear at Crossness.

• Wandsworth Common: NIGHT HERON flew in to small island on lake at 07.45, still present to 08.30 at least roosting in False Acacia on eastern end of island viewable from boardwalk (Nick Rutter) adult night Heron still present but very difficult to view. View from boardwalk at southern end of lake ( per J.Wilczur) Still present at 13:00 but only partially visible on island of southern lake. Easiest to view from near little bridge on north side of lake (Matt Palmer); 25 Swallow flew SW in a flock (J.Wilczur); NIGHT HERON still at 18:00 in same locations as reported earlier (Nick S); flew off c.20.45 possibly SE (mo). At the north end of the northern pond at c9pm then flew off low, perhaps towards southern pond. Does anyone have a photo of this bird, seemed to show yellow on cutting edges and lower mandible, so perhaps second summer rather than ad?(Matt Palmer) Why is this bird being referred to as just a Night Heron as opposed to a Black-crowned Night Heron? Just curious as not a species I'm overly familiar with. (Anon) I suspect because a lot of us started birding in the 70s or 80s (or earlier) when it was just called Night Heron. I don't think there's too much risk of confusion in Britain (I think YCNH would have meant a few more capitals and possibly some swearing in the description)

Sadly not- all eight ducklings disappeared shortly after hatching. Actually, the entire family (2 adults & 6 ducklings) disappeared so their fate was not known. Presumably the young were predated, perhaps the adults as well.
