Highlights of the month[edit | edit source]

The undisputed headline bird in December was London’s first BUFF-BELLIED PIPIT, which was found on the 12th at Queen Mother Reservoir, right on the edge of the London recording area. It obligingly stayed until the 26th, when amazingly it was joined by a second bird! But they were gone by the following day.

The month was also notable for a wide variety of sea ducks, divers and rarer grebes. Still at Q Mum Res, November’s Red-necked Grebe and Long-tailed Duck stayed on through most of December and were joined by a Great Northern Diver for four days mid-month. Long-tailed Duck were also to be seen at William Girling Reservoir and Grangewaters CP and a Red-necked Grebe was briefly at King George V Reservoir. Another Great Northern Diver visited Hilfield Park Reservoir for a couple of days and a Red-throated Diver was reported over Rainham Marshes. Island Barn Reservoir’s two female Velvet Scoter stayed for 12 days before flying off high on the 9th. A Common Scoter was at Hilfield Park Reservoir from the 1st to the 3rd. Several species of wild goose were reported, and Bewick’s Swan families were at Rainham Marshes and Tyttenhanger GP on the 8th.

Short-eared Owl were seen at various sites, with four long stayers hunting over Staines Moor and on at Dagenham Chase.

The only wader of note was the wintering Spotted Redshank at Crayford Marshes, which was seen regularly up to Christmas Day.

An Iceland Gull visited Rainham Marshes on the 28th and one was at Beddington SF on the 31st.

Waxwing were reported from all over the area, but mainly in small numbers passing over. The only twitchable flocks were c.25 in Streatham Hill from 7th to 9th (with one or two remaining to the 11th) and about 100 in Mill Hill from 27th to New Year’s Eve. November’s two Bearded Tit at London Wetland Centre and one at Brent Reservoir hung around till mid-December and another popped up occasionally at Rainham Marshes. Firecrest were seen at more than a dozen sites. Just outside the LNHS area a Siberian Chiffchaff was reported from Dorney/Eton Wick on the 16th.
