Bird of the Month: Wonderful wintering Whitefronts[]

WFG Magnus Hyde Park

European White-fronted Goose at the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain, Hyde Park, 2nd December 2020 (© Magnus Andersson 2020) — since few birders bother uploading images to this wiki any more, I have nicked one of Magnus’s wonderful photographs to illustrate this piece

According to Andrew Self’s scholarly Birds of London, the White-fronted Goose is no more than a scarce winter visitor in the London area — an assessment confirmed by the archive pages of this wiki. Small flocks of the European race (as the BTO calls it, although you may prefer Russian, Eurasian or Siberian race) are sometimes seen over London on their way from their breeding sites in northern Russia and Scandinavia to their wintering grounds in the windswept wetlands and estuaries of England’s south coast. Only rarely does the odd bird decide to drop into London for a while before moving on.

But this year Whitefronts have excelled themselves. The season’s first London birds, reported at five sites on the last day of November, turned out to be the vanguard of an unprecedented influx into the capital. Although the individuals in Regent’s Park and South Norwood on 31st Nov were not spotted again, the others all hung around into December, with the two at London Wetland Centre hopping over the fence to Barn Elms Playing Fields until the 9th, the Walthamstow Wetlands bird moving to Walthamstow Marshes until the 12th, and the Wanstead Flats bird heroically staying put right through into 2021, joined by a second bird from 18th Dec.

Fresh arrivals during the month included a wacky Whitefront that weirdly spent 11 days hanging around the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain in Hyde Park, while on the 5th a quartet of geese briefly graced the nearby Round Pond in Kensington Gardens. Just outside the LNHS Inner London area, four WFGs were at Clapham Common from the 4th to Christmas Eve — sometimes seen on the boating lake, but mainly in a grassy area that had been fenced off for reseeding.

With geese also lingering at several other London area sites, December’s Whitefronts allowed legions of aviphiles to add the species to their 2020 London lists. A flock of up to 22 birds (mainly juveniles) could be seen at Holyfield Farm for the whole month, while single birds were seen more than once at Burgess Park, Cornmill Meadows, Crayford Marshes, Netherhall GP and Richmond Park. There were also one-off sightings of up to three birds at 10 other sites.

Other anatids[]

Whitefronts were not the only anatids of interest in December. (I wish my laptop’s spellcheckery wouldn’t keep changing “anatids” to “antacids”.) Three Tundra Bean Goose were at Laleham from the 19th through into the new year (sharing their field with three Whitefronts on the 19th), a juvenile Dark-bellied Brent Goose was seen at Crayford Marshes on four dates and two Barnacle Goose were at Rainham Marshes for much of the month.

An adult female Ring-necked Duck was reported at Ashley Pit in the Lee Valley on the 11th but was not seen again. (There were up to about 30 known RNDs in the British Isles mid-month, but there were no more records from the London area.) Scaup were seen briefly at King George V Reservoir and Staines Reservoir. In Hyde Park, a drake Goldeneye, first reported on 27th Nov, remained on the Serpentine throughout December. Away from Inner London, Goldeneye were also reported from several other sites.

As for sawbills, the Lee Valley’s resident redhead Smew was joined by a drake towards the end of the month, but no other Smew were reported in London. The month’s sole Red-breasted Merganser was at Staines Reservoir on the 19th. Goosander, however, were recorded at 14 sites.

Other water-loving birds[]

  • A Great Northern Diver seen at Staines Reservoir on three mid-month dates was presumably the bird that was first recorded on 20th November.
  • After disappearing for the whole of November, the Hall Marsh Scrape/Cornmill Meadows Cattle Egret was reported several times during December.
  • The only records of Great Egret this month were one by the lake at Weald Country Park on the 3rd and another (or perhaps the same bird?) that briefly visited Walthamstow Wetlands on the following day.
  • A Common Crane dropped in to roost at Rainham Marshes on the afternoon of the 23rd.
  • As in November, only one Jack Snipe was recorded this month: a bird was found at Woodberry Wetlands on the 2nd and then seen again on the 31st.

Ringed gulls[]

Gulls ringed on the Continent have continued to show up in London. On various dates the Black-headed Gull flock in Broomfield Park included birds ringed in The Netherlands, the Czech Republic and Lithuania. A Polish-ringed BHG was in Rotherhithe on the 25th, and on the 30th ringed BHGs from both Sweden and Poland were in Kensington Gardens. Meanwhile, the Polish-ringed Mediterranean Gull that has taken a liking to Greenhill Park in Barnet was reported there throughout December.

(A colour-ringed Great Black-backed Gull reported at Swanscombe Marsh on the 30th was ringed locally, I suspect, since its letter-letter-number-letter code, WF5T, follows the same format as the North Thames Gull Group’s notorious leucistic Herring Gull, SH1T).

Passerines[]

  • The Walthamstow Wetlands Yellow-browed Warbler, first recorded on 19th Nov, was last reported on 7th Dec. Others were reported from Molesey Heath (1st, 31st) and Beddington Farmlands (31st).
  • A Siberian Chiffchaff seen and heard at Walthamstow Marshes (5th–7th) was presumably the “possible” reported on 26th Nov.
  • The month’s only Black Redstart were birds seen at Holyfield Farm (5th & 6th) and near Erith Pier (14th & 27th).
  • On 2nd Dec, two Mealy Redpoll were seen with a flock of Lesser Redpoll at Kenwood.
  • Common Crossbill were reported from Trent Park on three occasions, in parties of five, four and ten.

And finally . . .[]

When I compiled the November highlights I assumed that December’s Bird of the Month would be London’s first ever DARK-EYED JUNCO, photographed on 1st Dec in a Chiswick garden where it had apparently been lurking for a few days. But I have had to junk the Junco. Why? Because it is hard to justify celebrity status when its location was (understandably) kept secret and the bird was not reported again (so far as I have seen).

Over the years there have been only about 40 UK records of this New World sparrow. But a few birds have overwintered, so London’s debutante may still be skulking somewhere in the W4 postcode area, with its precise whereabouts known only to a privileged few. If it is still around, perhaps it will eventually be allowed to show itself to the capital’s twitchers — hopefully a highlight of a happier new year for London birders.
