Birds of the Month: a Dusky Warbler and a Little Bunting[]

At last! After many barren months for London’s twitchers, December 2021 produced not one but two lingering rarities, both first identified on the 14th and then both obligingly sticking around for the rest of the month. One of these rare vagrants was a DUSKY WARBLER at Walthamstow Marshes and the other was a LITTLE BUNTING in Bexley.

The Little Bunting was probably first seen on the 7th, when it was dismissed as a dodgy-looking member of the local Linnet brigade. After its correct identification on the 14th it was seen daily until the end of the month (and into the new year). The Dusky Warbler was somewhat elusive but was reported almost daily until the 25th, after which it seemed to disappear. But it must have been skulking somewhere in the area because it reappeared on 2nd January.

Dusky Warbler is the rarer of these two vagrants. On average about half a dozen Duskies reach the UK each year, but they rarely venture into the London Recording Area. In fact, there have been only three previous London records: a twitchable bird at Walthamstow Reservoirs for a week in February 2010, another seen by just one birder in Southwark in February 2015 and an overnight bird at Rainham Marshes in October 2016.

Little Bunting is slightly less rare, having been recorded in London about a dozen times. The first report was in 1956 and the most recent in 2018, when a bird lingered at Walthamstow Reservoirs from mid-January to early April. Perhaps the Bexley Bunt will hang about well into 2022.

Winter wildfowl[]

December saw several reports of European White-fronted Goose dropping in to spend a day or more at wetland sites in the London area. This used to be a rare occurrence, with Whitefronts normally seen only as occasional small flocks passing overhead on their way from their breeding sites in northern Russia and Scandinavia to their favoured wintering grounds in the wetlands and estuaries of England’s south coast. But this changed a year ago with a spectacular and unprecedented irruption into London — this wiki’s archive page for December 2020 includes reports of Whitefronts at 20 sites, singly or in small groups and often staying on site for days or even weeks.

This month’s records were less dazzling than a year ago, but WFGs were reported from Burgess Park (one bird, 21st–31st), Holyfield Hall Farm (four, 18th & 19th), Fairlop Waters (five, 24th) and Brent Reservoir (five, 18th; one, 20th). Interestingly, the first three of these sites also featured in last winter’s irruption, so perhaps this month’s visitors included some of last year’s birds making the same stop-over. At Brent Reservoir, a family group of four on the 18th was briefly joined by another bird before the quartet moved on, and it was presumably this fifth bird that was spotted again two days later — maybe a return visit by the goose that dropped in during the spring migration in May.

A Dark-bellied Brent Goose was briefly at London Wetland Centre on the 20th.

A drake Scaup was reported at King George V Reservoir on the 13th and then from the 19th to the 22nd, when it was joined by a first-winter bird. Two juveniles were at Walthamstow Wetlands on the 20th.

Reports of sawbills included just two Smew — a drake at London Wetland Centre on the 21st and a first-winter drake at Seventy Acres Lake on the 19th and 24th. A dozen records of Goosander included 18 at King George V Reservoir on the 13th and 10 at Ashley Pit on the 19th. But no Red-breasted Merganser have yet been recorded this winter.

Other waterbirds[]

November’s Great Northern Diver at King George V Reservoir was seen again occasionally throughout December and into the New Year. It was joined on the 13th by a Red-necked Grebe, which also stayed into the New Year, and a Black-necked Grebe. A Slavonian Grebe was seen at Staines Reservoir on the 4th and 12th.

Long-leggedy beasties[]

A Cattle Egret was reported at RSPB Rainham Marshes on the 1st, and one was at Hooks Marsh on the 18th and 19th. Great (White) Egret were seen at Broadwater Lake (1st–5th) and Aldenham Reservoir (5th, 12th). A Spoonbill was at Swanscombe Marsh on the 26th.

Person said it's not seen for long periods, so assumed it goes home to a house? (MM). Would be a high risk strategy to let a "pet" stray unaccompanied and at mercy of Sparrowhawk etc (Bob Watts) ok but where is it when not seen for long periods and how does it survive weather etc? (MM) The Wanstead White-cheeked Turaco is reported to have lived in the area for up to 12 years now, surviving the UK winters and feeding off residents bird tables. Tony Brown said that that Turaco is "surprisingly difficult to see and is often just heard singing and calling without revealing itself." So it's not unprecedented. (Reuben Braddock)
