Birding Site of the Month: Poulter ParkEdit

With stormy weather on every February weekend — including three storms severe enough to be given names (Ciara, Dennis and Jorje) — London birders may have been hoping for something unusual to be blown in from the Atlantic or the Channel. But nothing was reported that merits being celebrated as Bird of the Month.

So instead, for only the second time, I am nominating a Birding Site of the Month. The accolade goes to Poulter Park, in Mitcham, a site that until this year had been mentioned only once on this wiki (for a Whitethroat seen back in May 2011).

Poulter Park is a public park of just over 20 hectares (50 acres), with the River Wandle and the Wandle Trail running alongside it. It deserves its Site of the Month nomination for the wintering warblers and ’crests seen throughout the month in the trees that flank the Wandle.

The star bird was the Yellow-browed Warbler that arrived at the end of January and was reported almost daily into March. But in the same small area throughout February (and also into March), there were at least two Siberian Chiffchaff and at least two Firecrest. (No other YBW or Sibe Chiff was reported anywhere else in the London area, although Firecrest were present at a dozen other sites.) In addition, the site held up to 13 Common Chiffchaff and up to eight Goldcrest during the month.

Other passerines Edit

  • A Waxwing at Ealing Common on the 27th was the first of the year and only the third sighting this winter after two reports in December. Later the same day, and for the next two days, eight Waxwing were at Beckenham Junction.
  • The Black Redstart at Walthamstow Wetlands continued to show itself occasionally throughout February. No other Black Redstart were reported in the London area.
  • Two Bearded Tit seen at Walthamstow Wetlands since the beginning of the year continued to show themselves regularly through February and into March. Pairs of Beardies were also recorded from Rainham Marshes (12th) and Crossness (18th).
  • A Willow Tit was reported at Bletchingley (near Redhill) on the 29th. If accepted, it will be the first Willow Tit in the London recording area since 2003.
  • A Mealy Redpoll seen on the 17th and 18th in Colney Heath seems to have been the first of the year for London.
  • The month’s only definite record of Hawfinch was one seen flying to roost at Broxbourne Woods on the 8th.

And the rest Edit

Apart from a single bird at Aldenham Country Park on the 22nd, the only Barnacle Goose recorded were a flock of up to 24 near Island Barn Reservoir — perhaps a remnant of the flock of 46 seen there in December. No other winter goose species was reported in the London area.

The Long-tailed Duck present at Staines Reservoir since the beginning of November continued to hang around throughout February. A drake Scaup was also seen regularly at the same site throughout the month, and one was reported (“still”) at King George V Reservoir on the 28th. The only Smew recorded all month was a redhead seen at Seventy Acres Lake on three dates.

The two Great Northern Diver at Island Barn Reservoir from mid-January stayed through February and into March. Another was seen flying downriver at Grays on the 14th.

The two Cattle Egret seen at Hall Marsh Scrape (and occasionally elsewhere in the area) since November remained present right through February and into March. A Great Egret was seen at Hogsmill STW (Surbiton) on the 8th, and one flew over Woodford Green on the 12th.

Notable birds of prey included Merlin at Orsett Fen (6th) and Rainham Marshes (13th & 18th) and a Goshawk reported at Walthamstow Wetlands on the 29th.

No fewer than 16 Jack Snipe were counted at Beddington Farmlands on the 26th, along with 121 Common Snipe. Elsewhere there were just four Jacko reports — all single birds apart from four at Heathrow on the 6th.

Iceland Gull were reported from three sites — adults at London Wetland Centre (1st–9th & 22nd) and Rainham Marshes (11th & 12th) and a juvenile at Creekmouth (1st–8th). A Sandwich Tern at Puddledock Farm Fishery (Upminster) on the 5th was a first of the year for London.

The wintering Turtle Dove in Valentines Park was last recorded on the 8th.
