Bird of the Month: Green-winged Teal[]

Drake Green-winged Teal

Green-winged Teal, Ingrebourne Valley NR, 29th March 2019 (© Samuel Levy 2019)

It is difficult to nominate a single headline species for March because almost all the more interesting birds were seen only briefly and therefore untwitchable. But one rarity that did allow at least a few birders to catch up with it was a drake Green-winged Teal at Ingrebourne Valley NR on the 29th. First seen at lunchtime, it hung around all afternoon, but any weekend birder hoping to see it on the following day, a Saturday, would have been disappointed.

There have only been a dozen or so records of this North American vagrant since it was first recorded in 1961, at Hilfield Park Reservoir. As far as I am aware the Ingrebourne bird was the first in London since a more accommodating drake spent a couple of weeks at Crossness in April 2013.

Other interesting anatids this month include the first Garganey of the year: three were at Swanscombe Marsh on the 22nd, and birds were later seen at several other sites. The drake Scaup at Walthamstow’s Reservoir No 4 since early Dec was still present at the end of March, as was the drake on the south basin at Staines Reservoir since mid-Feb. Late in the month a drake Common Scoter was at Queen Mother Reservoir for a week and pairs were seen briefly at three other bodies of water. The Lee Valley’s three White-fronted Goose were last seen on the 13th, after a month in the Holyfield area.

Raptors[]

Rare birds of prey were particularly noteworthy this month, and the rarest raptor was a White-tailed Eagle that passed through Amwell on the 25th. A ringtail Hen Harrier was in the Copped Hall area (west of Epping) from the 25th to the 27th — presumably the bird that had been reported there on the 9th as a Pallid/Montagu’s Harrier. Another ringtail Hen Harrier flew over Swanscombe Marsh on the 30th. On the 17th a Rough-legged Buzzard passed low over King George V Reservoir, and on the 17th one was at Monkhams Hill/Hooks Marsh (where a bird apparently spent several weeks in 2018). On the 12th, an Osprey flew into Panshanger Park carrying a fish. Another Osprey flew northbound over Watford Junction Station on the 27th and one passed over Tyttenhanger GPs and Hilfield Park Reservoir on the 31st. March’s raptor reports also featured three sighting of Marsh Harrier other than in the lower Thames marshes, two of Merlin and one of Goshawk.

Long-leggedy wading birds[]

On the 23rd, a Common Crane flew over Rye Meads NR and on the 29th a White Stork circled over nearby Amwell NR. Two Cattle Egret at Hall Marsh Scrape for most of the month were presumably the birds seen regularly at Cheshunt’s Penton Field in Jan and Feb, having relocated 2km south-east. They were last seen on the 25th. On the same day one Cattle Egret was seen over Romford and on the 27th one was briefly at Amwell NR. Two Spoonbill at Crayford Marshes/Rainham RSPB on the 2nd were the first seen in London this year.

Other firsts of the year[]

Two Common Tern at Gallions Reach on the 23rd and a Yellow Wagtail at KGV Reservoir on the following day were first of the year for the whole UK. Selected London FoY records include Spotted Redshank (Rainham RSPB, 17th), Red-throated Diver (over Island Barn Reservoir, 23rd), Ring Ouzel (Olympic Park, 23rd), Hoopoe (Gallions Reach, 24th), Swift (Alexandra Park, 28th), Hobby (North Finchley, 28th) and Stone-curlew (Beddington Farmlands, 31st).

And the rest[]

  • The Black-throated Diver seen at Holmethorpe SPs early in Feb returned for the first nine days of March.
  • A few Little Gull passed through London during the month and a couple of Kittiwake were also seen. One or two white-winged gull were still around — an immature Iceland Gull seen regularly at London Wetland Centre, a juvenile Glaucous Gull for most of the month at Rainham RSPB and another at Queen Mother Reservoir.
  • The Penduline Tit found at Crossness NR on 18th Feb was last seen on 15th Mar.
  • Yellow-browed Warbler were seen at Rammey Marsh (12th) and Merton (17th).
  • After Wimbledon’s half dozen Waxwing were last seen on the 2nd, a single bird flew over Watford on the 12th and then eight birds turned up in Chelsea on the 25th and stayed for four days.
  • The Alexandra Palace Black Redstart was last seen on 21st Mar after more than 10 weeks there. The species was also recorded at five other sites, mainly late in the month.
