January’s bird of the month surely has to be Ilford's wintering '''Turtle Dove''', seen regularly in Valentines Park from 25th January through into February — at a time of year when this increasingly rare migratory species is normally 5,000km away in sub-Saharan Africa.

Turtle Dove is one of our fastest declining species, with UK extinction considered highly likely in our lifetime. Fifty years ago Britain had about 125,000 breeding pairs, but in recent summers there have been barely 1000 pairs. The decline is partly due to the loss of roosting sites and food resources, but is to a large extent the result of the illegal slaughter of hundreds of thousands of birds as they migrate through the Mediterranean.

This massive decline means that Turtle Dove probably no longer breeds within the London Recording Area, where it now occurs only as an occasional passage migrant. However, in recent years a few birds have chosen to winter in southern England, and the delightful Valentines Park bird — often seen with a small flock of Collared Dove — is one of only two birds known to be wintering in Britain.

Bird of the Month: a wintering Turtle Dove

January’s bird of the month surely has to be Ilford's wintering Turtle Dove, seen regularly in Valentines Park from 25th January through into February — at a time of year when this increasingly rare migratory species is normally 5,000km away in sub-Saharan Africa.

Passerines

London’s first Swallow of the year was seen high over Mayflower Park on the 25th. Like Turtle Dove, this is a species that now occasionally winters in southern England.

The Yellow-browed Warbler in Stave Hill Ecological Park was last seen on the 18th. Another turned up in Poulter Park, Mitcham, on the 27th.

Firecrest were seen regularly at Alexandra Park and Walthamstow Wetlands (two birds at each site) and occasionally at a dozen other sites.

For much of the month a Black Redstart was also at Walthamstow Wetlands, as were two Bearded Tit.

Hawfinch were seen at four sites during the month.

Anatids

A small number of wild geese were seen early in the month. On 1st Jan, five White-fronted Goose flew off from Fishers Green and one was seen at Holyfield Lake. Singles were also seen at Rainham Marshes (3rd, 11th). Single Dark-bellied Brent Goose were seen at Walthamstow Wetlands (6th) and Swanscombe Marsh (10th) and two at Rainham Marshes (11th). A Barnacle Goose was seen near Hilfield Park Reservoir on the 26th.

The long-staying Long-tailed Duck at Staines Reservoir was seen throughout January. The Walthamstow Wetlands Scaup was last seen on the 9th; another was seen several times at King George V Reservoir. Smew continued to be in short supply, with one or two at Seventy Acre Lake and just the occasional sighting elsewhere.

And the rest

  • Up to 11 Black-necked Grebe were at Staines Reservoir throughout the month, with one or two birds also seen at sites in the Colne Valey and Lea Valley.
  • Hall Marsh Scrape’s two Cattle Egret were seen at intervals throughout the month.
  • An immature Goshawk passed over Woodford Green on the 30th.
  • A juvenile Iceland Gull was seen at Rainham Marshes early in the month; later in the month a juvenile was seen at Creekmouth and an adult at London Wetland Centre.
