July's best birds[]

July usually produces something noteworthy, such as 2018’s Marsh Sandpiper and 2017’s Pectoral Sandpiper. But this year, not so much.

One of the more noteworthy birds in a quiet month was another sandpiper: Wood Sandpiper was seen on several dates at each of three sites — Beddington Farmlands (2nd, 5th, 11th, 12th), Rainham Marshes (11th, 28th, 29th) and Dagenham Chase (20th, 30th, 31st).

Another notable wader was Greenshank. In recent years there have usually been fewer than a dozen records in July, but this month we had nearly 30 reports from a total of 11 different sites.

Among a further 16 wader species this July were a Curlew Sandpiper in full summer plumage on the Thames foreshore at Crayford Marshes on the 27th, a Sanderling at Staines Reservoir on the 19th and a Spotted Redshank at Rainham/Purfleet on the 28th.

(On the 18th, a small peep was flushed by a Sparrowhawk at Staines Reservoir. Was it a Little Stint or a Temminck’s Stint — which was seen there in June — or even a Red-necked or Long-toed? We will never know.)

Pelecaniforms[]

A Great Egret arrived at Richmond Park’s Upper Pen Pond on the 24th and was seen regularly through into August. Great Egret were also seen at Rainham Marshes on the 19th (two birds), 21st and 27th. Earlier in the month, one was bizarrely seen flying low along Lewisham High Street on the 6th and two flew over St James's Park in central London on the 14th. Also on the 14th, Rainham Marshes hosted a Cattle Egret and a Spoonbill, with the latter hanging around for six days.

Larids []

A Roseate Tern passed downriver through Erith on the 21st. Other notable terns included at least 20 Black Tern at Staines Reservoir on the 27th, a Sandwich Tern through Walthamstow Wetlands on the 29th and three more Sarnies at Rainham Marshes on the 29th. The month’s many reports of Yellow-legged Gull included a count of at least 67 birds around Rainham tip on the 22nd.

Passerines[]

A Yellow Wagtail was at Hilfield Park Reservoir on the 2nd. London’s first Wheatear of the season was reported at Beddington SF on the 5th — with no more seen until further birds started trickling through from the 27th. A Lesser Redpoll passed over Golders Green on the 4th, and a couple of miles away in Muswell Hill one was heard calling repeatedly on the 11th.
