Bird of the Month: the not-so-common Common Crossbill[]

The first half of 2020 offered little excitement for London area birders, and July has sadly continued the trend.

In the absence of anything likely to have attracted twitchers and toggers, I scrabbled to find something to nominate as my Bird of the Month — until I noticed that one of July’s more interesting features has been an unusual passage of Common Crossbill. I therefore award the accolade to that species.

After one report in May and seven in June, London birders produced 71 records of Common Crossbill during July. Not only were these the first July records since a single report in July 2016, but the total number of sightings this month exceeded the yearly totals for each of the past six years and was the highest total of any month since 22 sightings in August 2012, 20 in October 2011 and 23 in July 2010. However, as might be expected for this species, the July sightings have all been flyovers rather than lingering twitchable and toggable birds.

And where were these birds headed? Well, the reports show no uniformity whatever in their trajectory: if you include the May and June sightings, there are four records of birds heading north, three heading east, two heading south, three heading south-west, seven heading west and four heading north-west. This all reminds me of the Stephen Leacock story in which “Lord Ronald . . . flung himself upon his horse and rode madly off in all directions.”

July also produced 10 sightings of Siskin — again an unusual number for the time of year.

Midnight waders[]

Comparatively little noc-migging activity has been reported since the flurry of reports during early lockdown in April. But one birder who has been monitoring migrants over his Ealing garden recorded a Greenshank at 0142 on the 10th followed on later nights by Whimbrel, Oystercatcher and Greenshank. These were recorded on three different nights but always at about half past midnight.

Also mid-month, a birder who was noc-migging “naked” (ie, without recording equipment) heard a Whimbrel over his Sidcup home on the 18th — again at half past midnight. Late in the month a Curlew was recorded over a Finchley garden at 0438 on the 27th and two calling Oystercatcher flew south-east over a Sidcup garden at midnight on the 29th.

(For birders who would rather encounter their waders during daylight, all these species obligingly showed themselves at various wetland sites during the month.)

Quackers[]

A drake Scaup was at Staines Reservoir on the 3rd and 4th, and single Garganey were seen at Brent Reservoir on the 12th and 14th) and at Rainham Marshes on the 19th. A few Common Scoter at Staines Reservoir (19th, 21st) may have been some of April’s many noc-mig migrants stopping off on their way back to the English Channel.

Long-leggedy beasties[]

Early on the 12th, four Cattle Egret were spotted high in trees on an island at Walthamstow Wetlands, probably after roosting overnight; but they had gone by mid-morning. On the morning of the 22nd, two were seen flying off from the same roost. The month’s only records of Great Egret were a bird at Dartford Marshes onhe 24th, 26th and 27th. A White Stork was seen circling over Rainham Marshes on the 23rd and again on the following day.

Bye-bye Cuckoos[]

Working from home during the CoViD-19 lockdown, a Chiswick birder looked up from his desk on 1st July and was surprised to see a Cuckoo flying low over his garden. Several later reports of Cuckoo were almost all identified as juveniles — not surprisingly, since BTO research shows that most adults have already left the UK by the beginning of July, having spent no more than two months in this green and pleasant land before dashing home to sub-Saharan Africa.

Bunting hunting[]

Last month the only Corn Bunting reported were birds found in double figures at a previously unknown hotspot near Dartford. This month there have been more reports from the same site, plus further records from another site nearby, where three chicks fledged, and also from Rainham Marshes and Crayford Marshes.

And the rest . . .[]

  • A Quail was heard in a Shoreham barley field on the 24th and possibly again very briefly on the 26th.
  • A Spotted Redshank was at Ruislip Lido on the 11th.
  • Sandwich Tern were seen at the Isle of Dogs (1st), Rainham Marshes (7th) and Woodberry Wetlands (22nd). Then two Little Tern and an Arctic Tern were recorded at King George V Reservoir on the 28th.
