Birds of the Month: Corn Bunting and Yellow WagtailEdit

Birding in the London area became easier during June with the gradual relaxation of the complex Covid-19 lockdown regulations. But even so, it was not a great month for twitchers, since the few reported rarities failed to hang around to be seen by anyone other than their finders.

So for my Bird of the Month I cannot nominate any rare passage migrant or vagrant. Instead, I have chosen two small native passerines that over recent years have almost disappeared from the London recording area as breeding birds but have now been found to have a possible stronghold in North Kent.

Wilmington, a village just south of Dartford, is not an established birding site. Indeed, until this month it had attracted only three mentions during the 18-year history of the London Bird Club Wiki. However, it now seems that Barn End Farm, on the edge of the village, is a haven for both Corn Bunting and Yellow Wagtail.

Both species were discovered on 14th June by Ian Stewart, who regularly reports sightings from birding hotspots in North Kent but presumably had not previously visited this site. Ian found no fewer than 10 singing Corn Bunting, plus two Yellow Wagtail. And in five follow-up visits later in the month, he recorded both Corn Bunt and Yellow Wag every time, with maximum counts of no fewer than 13 bunts (10 singing) and at least three wags. He also regularly saw other farmland birds such as Red-legged Partridge, Kestrel, Hobby, Skylark (usually more than 20), Swallow and Linnet.

To put these sightings into perspective, Corn Bunting has not been reported from any other London area site this month, and until Ian’s discovery it had been recorded just four times this year — a bird flushed at King George V Reservoir on 2nd Feb, two at Rainham on 14th May, and singing individuals at two other North Kent sites on 18th May (both also found by Ian). As for Yellow Wagtail, a spring passage that lasted from early April to mid-May has been followed by just one other London area sighting, at Fairlop Waters on 7th June.

Birds of prey Edit

Last month’s sightings of Hobby in suburban settings have continued, including one hunting successfully in a Highgate street, one with prey in a Foots Cray furniture store car park and one probably chasing Swifts in Clapham. Kestrel also seem to be hunting in closer proximity to humans, with birds seen perched in busy shopping streets in Balham and Streatham, as well as hovering or circling over suburban gardens.

On the 1st an Osprey was seen flying north over Greenwich at 1400 and another was over Walthamstow Wetlands at 1730. And on the 20th a Goshawk, probably female, soared high over Alexandra Park before drifting south across Crouch End.

Other noteworthy June birds Edit

  • An unseasonal Goldeneye, a female, was at Brent Reservoir on the 7th.
  • On the evening of 20th Jun, two Spoonbill — one adult, one immature — circled over Walthamstow Wetlands for a few minutes before flying east. They seem likely to have been the birds seen at the same site in late May and on 1st June. And it may be the same two birds that were seen by the Thames at Dartford Marshes from the 28th to the 30th.
  • A Spotted Redshank in full summer plumage was reported at Tyttenhanger GP on the 13th but left before a horde of bird photographers turned up the following morning.
  • Another wader rarely seen in June is Sanderling, but a summer-plumaged bird was at Dartford Marshes on the 2nd.
  • A Bee-eater was heard calling as it drifted eastward over farmland near Ewell on the 1st. It was the London area's second this year, after one on 18th May, which was also over Ewell and was also only heard.
  • June produced several reports of a Black Redstart in the City, singing from the tower of St-Dunstan-in-the-West and the roof of the Maughan Library; a bird singing on the roofs of Essex Street was likely to be the same bird patrolling a 300m-wide territory. In Mayfair, another Black Redstart has been singing from the rooftops and chimneys behind Bonhams in New Bond Street.
  • On 8th June a Marsh Warbler was reported by the River Colne near Stocker’s Lake, where it sang and showed itself between 0830 and early evening. Sadly, it was not reported again. (There was a small influx of Marsh Warbler into the UK in mid-June, with up to 30 birds logged.)
  • Seven sightings of Crossbill during the month were the first June records since 2015. And late in the month there were three reports of Siskin — also unusual in the London area in summer.
