Bird of the Month: Black Redstart (again)[]

Black Redstart was my Bird of the Month for June 2017 and, after three quiet years for the species, I have chosen it again this month — in the absence of anything more exciting for London birders to chase after.

Several Black Redstart seem to have been holding territories in central London. It is difficult to be sure of numbers because the males tend to patrol large territories, singing (often unseen) from various rooftop perches. But it seems that there have been at least three singing males in Mayfair, with reports also from St James’s, Westminster, Soho and Covent Garden. A pair were also in Shoreditch (where there have been reports for several years), while further afield singing birds were reported from Canary Wharf, Hackney Wick and Heathrow.

Anatids[]

A feral Barnacle Goose was at Walthamstow Wetlands for much of the month, joined by a second bird from the 29th. And a Brent Goose of unknown origin was at Kew Gardens on the 3rd. A few Common Scoter passed through London mid-month: 10 male and one female were at Walthamstow Wetlands on the 18th, two male and a female at Hilfield Park Reservoir on the 20th, and a further female at Walthamstow Wetlands on the 21st. The Walthamstow site also hosted a male Scaup from the 25th to the end of the month.

Pelicaniforms[]

Rainham Marshes was the place for long-legged beasties this month, with Great Egret and Spoonbill there on the 27th, Spoonbill again on the 30th and a White Stork overhead on the same day. Also on the 30th, another Great Egret was seen over Alexandra Park. Spoonbill were also seen earlier in the month, with one at Walthamstow Marshes on the 4th and two at Dagenham Chase on the 13th — a first record for the site.

Larids[]

An adult Kittiwake was seen flying upriver at Rotherhithe on the 2nd and one was briefly at London Wetland Centre on the 5th. A Caspian Tern was seen flying downriver at Gallions Reach on the 19th and two Sandwich Tern passed over London Wetland Centre on the 29th.

Other noteworthy birds[]

  • A Common Quail was reported from Wanstead Flats on the 6th, with two birds recorded on the 7th.
  • A Woodcock was flushed on Hampstead Heath Extension on the 7th.
