• Rainham RSPB: MARSH SANDPIPER until 0700 then flew S toward Thames w Redshank but returned to Aveley Pool 0810 (Howard Vaughan tweets); seen briefly in flight with Redshank 0705 drop onto reserve then in flight near Aveley Bay with Greenshank 0808 and flying towards Aveley Pool 0810 (Bob Watts), MS still on south end of Aveley Pool with a clear but distant view fr 2nd boardwalk viewing platform [when approaching from the woodland area] (Harringay Birder tweet at 1105). The wiki's history shows that Paul posted his sighting at 08:42 and then at 08:44 someone, presumably accidentally, deleted it while adding a posting for Staines Res. Paul then re-posted at 11:31 but (also presumably accidentally) typed "Rosy" rather than "Red". Aah. That explains it (MRH).

Sunday 22nd July 2018

• Alexandra Park: 2 Red Kite high east over Wood Green Res 1030, also 40+ Black-headed Gull including juvenile, Brown Argus (APOG Birders). Green-underside Blue, butterfly/ant hill meadow, 12.15 (Greg Smith ) Not a British species (also outside of its normal flight period), are you sure of the id? (M. Honey) As far as i am concerned there is only one record of Green-underside Blue in the UK which was in 1936 somewhere in Devon in September (SL) That's correct, in Torquay in September 1936, so also outside its nomal flight period so thought to be a dubious record (MRH). I meant to post this as "could it be?", as i thought it may be worth further investigation. Butterfly appeared to match images found at ukbutter flies.co. Distinct hint of blue under wings, but not a good view of top. Observed by 2 of us, and it was not Common and Holly Blue, as there were several of these to compare it against. Is there another Blue that show's a distinct blue tinge under the wings? (Greg Smith)
