Bird of the Month: pre-lockdown Twite at Beddington[]

Thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic, birding during March became increasingly difficult with the closure of many major birding sites and the government’s strong advice not to make unnecessary journeys. Then on 23rd March the Prime Minister announced a nationwide emergency lockdown. We were allowed to leave our homes only for essential supplies, for medical care, for “absolutely necessary” work or for one form of daily exercise in the immediate vicinity of the home. So by the end of the month all responsible birders were restricted to birding from home or on local walks.

My nomination for Bird of the Month comes from the middle of the month, before the lockdown more or less put an end to twitching. My choice is the two Twite seen at Beddington Farmlands from the 18th to the 21st. Some birders from elsewhere in London may have managed to see them in those last days before unnecessary travel was banned under emergency legislation.

Twite is an increasingly scarce winter visitor to the London area, and Beddington’s couple were the capital’s first Twite in more than two years, following a single bird at the same twite-site for two months in winter 2017–18.

Other passerines[]

I won’t bore readers by listing all London’s passerine firsts-of-the-year, but it is notable that Canons Farm claimed London’s first Wheatear (11th), first Woodlark (16th) and first Ring Ouzel (19th).

As for lingering winter visitors, Poulter Park’s Yellow-browed Warbler was still being seen until the 23rd, by which date it had for at least 10 days been the only YBW still known to be in the UK. Two Siberian Chiffchaff and two Firecrest were also still present at Poulters Park for most of the month. Alexandra Park’s Conservation Wood was another reliable site for Firecrest-spotting until the 19th.

The Black Redstart at Walthamstow Wetlands continued to show itself occasionally until the 19th. Others were reported once each from Canons Farm, Langley Vale Wood and Addlestone.

Also at Walthamstow Wetlands, the two Bearded Tit present since January were last seen on the 14th. Otherwise, Beardies were reported only from Thames-side wetlands.

Seven Waxwing were spotted in a tree in Shirley on the 12th, and two were still there early the next morning. Another was at Sanderstead Pond on the 15th and four were seen briefly in Epping two days later.

The month’s only Hawfinch record was one flying over Woodford Green on the 27th.

Honkers[]

For one Woodford Green birder, lockdown viz-mig from home resulted in the sight of 33 migrating Brent Goose early on the 24th. The only other Brent Goose records this month were of three birds low over South Norwood CP on the 8th and one on the Thames at Rainham/Dartford on the 14th.

Two immature White-fronted Goose were at Dagenham Chase from the 2nd to the 21st.

The long-staying flock of Barnacle Goose near Island Barn Reservoir had shrunk to 20 birds by the 7th; 13 were at Fishers Green on the 17th.

Quackers[]

Staines Reservoir’s wintering Scaup was scoped on and off up to the 19th and the long-staying Long-tailed Duck was logged until the 21st.

The year’s first Common Scoter, a flock of 15, were on the Thames at Rainham on the morning of the 19th; later that day, 13 of them were at King George V Reservoir, having left two of their number behind, where they were seen on the river at Purfleet the next morning. One or two Scoter were also spotted at other sites towards the end of the month.

The female Smew at Seventy Acres Lake was last reported on the 3rd. Also in the Lea Valley, a drake was seen several times at North Met Pit and King George V Reservoir. On the 15th, KGV Res also had 20 Goosander and 32 Goldeneye. But peak counts of Goldeneye usually occur in March, and the KGV total was beaten by 46 birds at Wraysbury GPs on the 10th (still way short of the London record of 146 birds at King George VI Reservoir in March 1986).

Other water birds[]

Despite restricted views, the two long-staying Great Northern Diver at Island Barn Reservoir were still being seen regularly until the 21st.

Up to 15 Black-necked Grebe were at Staines Reservoir throughout the month, with a few birds also reported from Hilfield Park Reservoir, Walthamstow Wetlands and Rye Meads RSPB.

Long-leggedy birds []

Hall Marsh Scrape’s two Cattle Egret continued to hang around the area regularly till the 20th, by which time they were beginning to show signs of breeding plumage. Two were also seen flying south over Rainham Marshes on the 16th. A Great Egret over Wanstead Flats on the 25th was the only bird of this species reported in March.

Two White Stork — presumably from the reintroduction project in West Sussex — were seen over Hersham, Surrey, on the evening of the 11th and then at various Lower Thames wetland sites on the following three days. Two seen over Trent Park on the 14th may (or may not) have been the same birds. Two were also seen on the 21st at Holmethorpe Lagoons Nature Reserve.

Larids[]

The Lower Thames juvenile Iceland Gull was seen at various locations between Beckton and Rainham between the 5th and the 21st. The adult at London Wetland Centre was seen on various dates until the 18th.

Little Gull in small numbers passed through several sites late in the month, with one juvenile lingering at Hilfield Park Reservoir for four days.

London’s first Kittiwake of the year was seen flying upriver at Purfleet on the 12th and the first Common Tern was at Rainham RSPB on the 21st.

And the rest[]

  • London’s first Osprey of the year passed over Upminster on the 6th.
  • A ring-tailed Hen Harrier was recorded in the Ten Acre Wood area on the 15th.
  • The year’s first Little Ringed Plover was seen at Staines Reservoir on the 11th, the first Knot was at Beddington Farmlands on the 20th and the first Grey Plover at Rainham Marshes on the 23rd.
