Transient rarities: Red-rumped Swallow, Nightjar & Golden Oriole[]
A typical dictionary definition of “transient” is “passing through a place with only a brief stay”, which is a good description of three rare birds recorded in the London area in May — all species notorious for showing themselves only fleetingly and moving on before twitchers can turn up to add them to their year-lists.
The first of these birds was a Red-rumped Swallow that made a brief visit to London Wetland Centre on the 8th. This sighting continues a near-annual trend in recent times, since in six of the past eight years the London area has had just a single record of this species — always in late April or early May and almost always disappearing before any twitchers arrive.
(If you’re interested, these six earlier birds were at Beddington in May 2013, Thamesmead in May 2014, Holmethorpe in May 2015, Island Barn Reservoir in April 2017, Rainham in April 2018 and Sewardstone in April 2020.)
The month’s second transient bird was a Nightjar seen and heard in Battersea Park on the evening of the 15th. Found at 20:50 (just after sunset), it was watched for just 70 minutes around the Sub-Tropical Garden, and was heard churring briefly until disturbed by a yapping mutt. It was the first Nightjar recorded in the LNHS Inner London recording zone since a sighting in June 2005 — also in Battersea — and only the 11th recorded in the while LNHS recording area since this wiki began in 2002.
(The most spectacular of these earlier Nightjars was a bird that spent 27 days in a residential district of Teddington in May/June 2006 and was sometimes seen sitting on the road or pavement or on parked cars. The other sightings were all brief apart from a three-day bird in September 2014 at Middlesex Filter Beds, where it roosted during the day on a branch of a large elder.)
May’s third fugacious rarity was a Golden Oriole that was heard, sound-recorded and then briefly seen and togged in flight at Totteridge Valley on 30th May. Golden Oriole is another species that occurs less than annually in the London area, with wiki records in only 10 previous years this century, usually in late May or early June.
(The most recent of these earlier Golden Oriole reports were in May 2020 in Epping Forest and May 2019 in Richmond Park — both the only wiki entries for the whole year. Earlier records include reports on 19th June 2016 from Pinner, Barnes and New Malden — perhaps the same bird making its way across the metropolis.)
Anatids[]
After a mad winter for records of European White-fronted Goose in the London area (see previous monthly reports), sightings continued into May with single birds seen at Holyfield Hall Farm (11th), Amwell NR (14th) and Brent Reservoir (19th).
Three Common Scoter were seen at Purfleet on the 8th, and a Garganey was at London Wetland Centre on the 29th.
Larids[]
Larid reports this month included two records of sub-adult white-wingers — an Iceland Gull seen from Crossness on the 2nd and a Glaucous Gull at RSPB Rainham Marshes on the 5th.
Other gull sightings included 11 Little Gull at Purfleet on the 8th, when a Sandwich Tern and three Arctic Tern were also seen. On the following day a Black Tern and two Arctic Tern were at Broadwater GP, and on the 20th a North London birder had a surprise when a Sandwich Tern flew over a residential road in Oakwood. A Little Tern was seen at RSPB Rainham Marshes on the 28th.
On 13th May, eight Kittiwake circled Staines Reservoir before flying off north. A week earlier, six were briefly at London Wetland Centre before heading off north-west.
Other non-passerines[]
- A Black-necked Grebe was at Wanstead Flats for most of the month (from the 3rd to the 29th).
- The only Great Egret reported this month was a bird seen flying past a second floor window in East Dulwich on the 28th.
- May produced two records of Osprey — over Swanley on the 1st and Wanstead Flats on the 6th.
- A Wood Sandpiper was at Hall Marsh Scrape on the 8th and 9th, joining a Greenshank that lingered there from the 7th to the 14th.
- A Turtle Dove was reported at Mudchute Farm on the 21st.
Dubious warblers []
The month’s wiki postings include three reports of possible rare warblers. The most intriguing is a glimpse of a potential Great Reed Warbler at Crossness on the 9th — intriguing mainly because for 48 hours just a year ago Crossness hosted the first ever GRW recorded in the London area.
The other two possibles were both Marsh Warbler — one at South Norwood CP on the 24th and another at Dartford Marshes on the 26th. Although this species still breeds in small numbers in the UK, there have been few confirmed reports of it in the London area. One was trapped and ringed at Crossness LNR in June 2004, and two pairs spent the summer of [2013|August 2013] at Rainham Marshes. Of the other half dozen records already on this wiki, one is listed only as “probable”, one is described as “possible” and the third has a comment that “there seems to be some doubt about the record”.
Other passerines[]
Reports of singing Nightingale include four that spent time at sites within London’s built-up suburbs. The Brent Reservoir bird first heard on 21st April remained present for more than four weeks (and was possibly moved on by the police during a search for a body on 22nd May). A Nightingale was also heard in Gutteridge Wood (Hayes) on various dates from the 2nd to the 18th, with another at nearby Minet Country Park on the 14th and 19th. And a bird reported at Leytonstone on the 26th had apparently been singing for several night. (Other Nightingale were reported from more rural sites such as Fishers Green, Sewardstone Marsh, Dartford Marshes and West Thurrock.)
- A Pied Flycatcher was seen on Plumstead Common on the 4th.
- A Wood Warbler sang in Richmond Park for much of the day on the 12th.
- A Woodlark was flushed at Wanstead Flats on the 28th.
- Black Redstart were recorded at half a dozen sites during the month — most notably a pair that seem to have set up home in affluent Mayfair.
