Bird of the Month: A fleeting Hoopoe[]

Hoopoe at Seething Wells Filter Beds, 1st November 2021 (© Linda Pryke 2021)

It is now so long since we had a truly memorable Bird of the Month in London, and November 2021 has sadly failed to break the trend. So this month I am nominating a bird that appeared early on the first day of the month and was seen only fleetingly by someone who didn’t even know what it was but managed to post a blurry image on Twitter for others to identify. Luckily it was a bird so striking in its appearance that it was easily diagnosed as a Hoopoe.

The bird was found at Seething Wells Filter Beds in Surbiton by pond-prodder Linda Pryke (@pondprodder). Once it had been identified for her she justifiably tweeted: “Awesome! I’m gobsmacked, amazed, stunned, thrilled.”

Hoopoe are actually seen in the London area almost annually, although most often in spring. Linda’s bird was the first London record since April 2020, when a small influx into southern England included a bird seen near Keston (Kent).

Linda’s Hoopoe flew off in the direction of Hampton Court but was not reported again, which is typical of the species. Apart from a four-day bird at Farthing Down in August 2011, London’s Hoopoe are almost always seen on one day only — often only briefly — and then, despite their striking appearance, cannot be found again either at the same site or anywhere nearby.

And the rest[]

  • A drake Long-tailed Duck was reported from Staines Reservoir on the 22nd, and apparently a Ferruginous Duck was there on the previous day.
  • A Great Northern Diver was at King George V Reservoir for a few days late in the month.
  • The Black-necked Grebe that has graced Wanstead Flats for nearly seven months apparently left on 29th November after an overnight freeze.
  • Three Cattle Egret were reported from RSPB Rainham Marshes on several days early in the month, and no fewer than eight were present on the 19th. Single birds were also reported from Holyfield Hall Farm (19th, 22nd, 26th) and near Orpington (24th, 25th).
  • There were 16 records of Woodcock during the month, including no fewer than nine birds in Richmond Park at dusk on the 18th. Jack Snipe were reported from four sites.
  • A Little Gull was at Hilfield Park Reservoir on the 14th.
  • A Long-eared Owl was heard at Horton Country Park at dusk on the 22nd. Passage Short-eared Owl were seen over Brent Reservoir (7th), Lonsdale Road Reservoir (14th) and Ten Acre Woods (22nd).
  • Two tardy hirundines were recorded this month — a House Martin at Walthamstow Wetlands on the 19th and a Swallow over Lake Farm Country Park on the 26th.
  • Dartford Warbler began returning to their winter strongholds in Richmond Park and Bushy Park, with up to six counted in the latter park. Good numbers of Stonechat were also reported from both parks, and Dartford Warbler were also reported from RSPB Rainham Marshes and Wimbledon Common.
  • In the second half of the month, a Black Redstart was seen several times feeding on the Peregrine nest ledge at Charing Cross Hospital — even inside the nest box on one occasion — despite the continuing presence of Peregrine in the area.
  • Six sightings of Hawfinch in the first half of the month included a flock of 12 birds over Greenwich Park on the 2nd.

  • Brockwell Park: 10 Moorhen, 4 Coot, 17 Tufted Duck, 45 Black-headed Gull (Tony Stones)
  • Churchill Gardens Housing Estate "Pimlico": c40 House Sparrow in roost - the only one in Central London? Pub that had several nests in vent shafts now under refurbishment (Michael Mac) depends what you mean by central London but there's a few groups that I'm aware of although I've not tried to find their roost locations - Covent Garden, Fortune Street Park, Park Street in Southwark (Reuben Braddock). This is interesting - I don't know whether you consider Borough or Elephant and Castle to be regarded as central London, but I know of / knew of some small populations in these areas (birds use the allotments in Lamlash Street for e.g. and were also in Roupell Street near Waterloo i think) - one winter I found a roost in a dense holly bush somewhere near Inner London Court/Swan Street, but 40 is a very good number, and the above might all be places to try if you are in these vicnities at dusk or after the birds get up ! (Tony Stones). By Central London I mean the area tourists perceive as London, SW1, W1, WC2 etc area of the big parks where House Sparrows are very rare and the sites people have mentioned are spread thinly further east. Though I think there are a few at the Tower of London still? A few years back I saw a few on Waterloo East station platform (Michael Mac) Yes, there are still some at Tower of London, quite tame too. The only (admittedly small) colony that I'm personally aware of in the area you mention is at Covent Garden, although I haven't checked it this year (Reuben Braddock)
