Highlights of the month[]

October’s only twitchable rarity was a Great White Egret that lingered around Tyttenhanger GP from the 7th to the 15th and reappeared on the 30th. On the 13th, Staines Reservoir had a visit from a Red-throated Diver and on the 15th the site’s Black-necked Grebes were joined by a Slavonian Grebe. On the same day a Red-necked Grebe visited Richmond Park. Early in the month a Guillemot ventured up the Thames as far as Lambeth Bridge and at the end of the month two Great Skua flew past the London Wetland Centre. Other LWC sightings included nine Spoonbill flying east on the 1st and the first wintering Bittern on the 7th. A Common Crane was seen over Hanwell on the 6th and on the 11th seven Whooper Swan dropped in at Amwell GP. The Long-tailed Duck of unknown origin was still in the Lea Valley early in the month, and last winter’s equally dodgy Hooded Merganser reappeared at Connaught Water on the 17th. Jack Snipe settled in at the London Wetland Centre and Brent Reservoir, and on the 19th, four were recorded at Rye Meads along with no fewer than 235 Common Snipe. Reports of Woodcock included an exhausted bird pottering about in Holborn on the 14th. At the end of the month a Grey Phalarope spent a couple of days at Hilfield Park Reservoir. A Swift (Common or Pallid) was seen over Totteridge Valley on the 25th and over three other London sites on the 27th. A Wryneck was found in Hyde Park on the 2nd. Two Yellow-browed Warbler were seen on the 3rd and an eastern race Lesser Whitethroat was reported at Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park on the 29th. Wintering Firecrest turned up at various sites — most notably a pair that settled in at Grovelands Park. On the 3rd, a Red-throated Pipit passed over Rainham Marshes and on the 9th a probable Olive-backed Pipit was reported over Harringay. The 10th was a peak day for Redwing migration, with large numbers reported from various sites, including 2,750 passing high over Regent's Park. On the 18th, a Great Grey Shrike and four Bearded Tit were recorded at Rye Meads. We also learnt this month of a proposal to develop bird-rich farmland on the edge of Edgware into yet another golf course — petition here.

  • Battersea Park: 2 Peregrines pr on & round Gasometer, 6 Gadwall 3pr, 3 Little Grebe pr & fledged chick, no Egyptian Geese - my theory why this species doesn't seem to have taken to this site could be because of distance from edge of lake to cover, as they like to stand on the edge of water & have good vision of predators approaching - dogs can get very close to them without being seen so they don't like it (Michael Mac).
