Bird of the Month: London’s third Rustic Bunting[]
We can hang out the bunting to celebrate a good month for buntings in October, with a Snow Bunting over West Putney/Richmond Park on the 16th, two Corn Bunting over St Albans on the same day and a Lapland Bunting over Barnes on the 25th, while Yellowhammer were reported from nine sites in and around the capital and Reed Bunting from 25.
But the star among this abundance of buntings was the RUSTIC BUNTING found by Nick Croft at Wanstead Flats on the 17th and present until the 21st. It was only the third ever seen in the London recording area, following an unfortunate specimen snared by a bird-catcher near Aldenham Reservoir in 1882 and a bird at Beddington Sewage Farm for a month in early 1993.
During its five-day stay, the Wanstead bunting was seen by dozens of birders, some of whom posted photographs on social media. But nobody uploaded an image onto this wiki. Come on, guys — it’s not that difficult. Just click on “New”, then “Newpictures”, then “Add new image”.
With a Little Bunting having lingered from January to April and an Ortolan Bunting appearing briefly last month, London has notched up an impressive total of eight emberizid species this year.
A plethora of pipits[]
October was a good month for pipits as well as buntings. Apart from recording numerous Meadow Pipit and a good few Rock Pipit and Water Pipit, London birders reported a Tawny Pipit over West Putney on the 18th, a Richard’s Pipit over Warren Gorge on the 19th and another Richard’s at Beddington Farmlands from the 29th to the 31st. (If you must use silly pipit abbreviations, that’s Mipit, Ropit, Wapit, Tawpit and Dickypit — but no Tripit, Blypit, Olipit, Pecpit, Artypit or Bupit.)
Other passerines and a near-passerine[]
- Two late House Martin were seen at King George V Reservoir on the 31st.
- A Red-breasted Flycatcher was trapped and ringed at Rammey Marsh Lake on 4th Oct, but disappeared as soon as it was released.
- October produced eight reports of Hawfinch — all of either one or three birds. So there is no repeat of 2017’s record-breaking irruption, which made Hawfinch my Bird of the Month a year ago.
- A Hoopoe was reported in Greenwich Park on the 11th (but described only as a “probable” by Rare Bird Alert).
Winter wildfowl[]
A single Whooper Swan was at Staines Reservoir/Island Barn Reservoir for three days mid-month. Five were at Amwell GP early on the 19th and four flew over Barnes on the 22nd. Three Dark-breasted Brent Goose were reported at Rainham Marshes on the 19th. A Barnacle Goose was at Wanstead Flats on and off from the 4th to the 27th and one was at Amwell GP on the 12th. A couple of dozen Barnies flew over Leatherhead on the 16th; then 31 were on Island Barn Reservoir on the 24th. Sawbill sightings included 10 reports of Goosander and two of Red-breasted Merganser, but Smew have not yet started to arrive.
A first twitchable Cattle Egret[]
Since the beginning of this century, Cattle Egret have been seen increasingly frequently in Britain, and even bred after a large influx in the winter of 2007–08. Sightings in the London area are still unusual, and birds have rarely lingered for more than a day or so. However, October produced London’s first twitchable Cattle Egret, which hung around Rainham Marshes from 3rd October until the end of the month, associating with the cows that graze the site’s damp meadowland. And it was joined by a second bird from the 21st onwards.
Birds of prey[]
On 29th Oct a Rough-legged Buzzard thermalled over Primrose Hill, and on the 30th a different juvenile spent the day at Rainham Marshes and Dartford Marshes, where it roosted overnight. Another RLB appeared at Rainham Marshes across the Thames from the latter on the 31st, and both birds drifted off early in the afternoon. Other notable raptors included a late Osprey high over Woodford Green (7th), a Black Kite over Dagnam Park (10th) and a Honey Buzzard high over Wimbledon Common (18th). Hen Harrier were reported several times, also mainly over the Lower Thames marshes; most reports were of juv/fem ringtails, but one male was seen.
Waders[]
It looks as if this winter may be a good one for Jack Snipe. The first birds of the season appeared at Brent Reservoir (6th), London Wetland Centre (6th) and Holmethorpe SPs (8th). These three sites all produced further sightings throughout the month, with occasional reports from nine other sites. In all there were 44 sightings — in marked contrast to a year ago, when the first bird of the season did not appear until 19th November, and there were only 15 records in total by the end of December.
Other non-passerines[]
- On 28th Oct a Great Northern Diver was seen on the Thames at Purfleet before flying off upriver.
- A juvenile Gannet passed over Island Barn Reservoir on the 1st and one was seen over Hatfield on the 2nd.
- The ringed White Stork first seen in September was at Holmethorpe SPs from 11th to 15th October.
- An immature Spoonbill was at Rainham Marshes on the 11th
- A Great Skua flew upriver past Gallions Reach on the 7th.
- There were 19 reports of Short-eared Owl during the month, compared with just four definite records in October 2017.
