Bird of the Month: an American Nighthawk in LondonEdit

NighthawkByLewisNewman

There can be no doubt about October’s Bird of the Month. It has to be the sensational adult male Common Nighthawk photographed by Lewis Newman as it circled over Bushy Park at about 12.30pm on the 19th.

Lewis’s photographs show feather damage and other plumage details that identify his stunning bird as the same individual that had hung around Ballymena in Northern Ireland for more than a month — perhaps carried over the Atlantic by the remnants of Hurricane Lorenzo when it should have been migrating from North to South America. The bird was last recorded at Ballymena at about 7pm on the 17th, and had therefore flown the 550km (340 miles) to London in less than 42 hours.

Sadly, although many birders managed to twitch the bird during its Northern Ireland sojourn, it did not give Londoners the same opportunity. Only one other birder seems to have seen it over Bushy Park. It later passed over Richmond Park and may have been seen over Walthamstow Marshes, but it then disappeared without trace.

There are currently just 24 accepted records of this New World caprimulgid in the British Isles, with most of the sightings (14) occurring in Scilly. The only previous record for London was an exhausted bird found by a dog walker at Barnes Common on 23rd Oct 1984. Putney RSPCA took it into care, but it died five days later.

Wetland birds Edit

A small flock of Barnacle Geese passed over Walthamstow Reservoirs on the 14th and a larger flock of White-fronted Goose flew over Primrose Hill on the 31st. A Dark-bellied Brent Goose was on the Thames at Purfleet on the 20th and another was briefly at Woodberry Wetlands on the 24th.

A Red-throated Diver appeared on the main lake in Regent’s Park on the 30th. It was still there the next day, but clearly not in the best of health and had to be taken into care.

There were five records of Great Egret during the month, but October was the first month this year with no sightings of Cattle Egret.

Birds of Prey Edit

An Osprey flew over Alexandra Park on the 6th, a Goshawk was reported at Woodford Green on the 7th, a lateish Hobby was seen at Walthamstow Wetlands on the 8th, and a Merlin was at Staines Moor on the 13th.

Seen in Enfield on a couple of dates was a South American Black-chested Buzzard-eagle — apparently a 20-year-old adult male that had gone AWOL from captivity in Essex in August.

Woodcock Edit

Migrant Woodcock began arriving in the last week of the month. As usual, some fell foul of the London skyscrapers that now punctuate their age-old Thames Valley flightpath. On the 25th, one was found dead in the City, and on the 31st another was found in a City street but was eventually able to fly off. Eight other London sightings included one on the pitch at Wembley Stadium on the 27th.

Passerines Edit

Three late Sand Martin were seen at Tyttenhanger GPs on the 13th and a Swallow passed over Alexandra Park on the 27th.

A Yellow-browed Warbler was in Walthamstow Forest on the 10th and another at Bowyers GP on the 30th. A Garden Warbler that lingered at Bankside for four weeks was last seen on the 15th. Since this wiki began in 2002, two others have just managed to hold out into October, being recorded on 1st Oct 2011 and 2nd Oct 2014. The latest ever record was on 5th Nov 1998.

There were 10 records of Hawfinch in the second half of the month, but they totalled just 15 birds.
