Bird of the Month: Cattle Egret[]

According to a new report from the Rare Breeding Birds Panel, the Cattle Egret can now be considered a permanent UK resident. After first breeding in Britain in 2008 it held off for a while, but a number of pairs have apparently bred over the past few years. If any were in the London area it is a well-kept secret.

However, even if not yet nesting in London, Cattle Egret are certainly being seen increasingly frequently. October began with a bang when a flock of at least eight were seen in a horse grazing field near King George V Reservoir on the 5th. The exact number was not clear because the birds were well hidden in long grass. In addition, a single bird spent four hours at London Wetland Centre on the same day and three were at Enfield Lock the next day. Then up to five were to be seen at Rainham Marshes on various dates from the 8th to the 30th, with a sideshow of three at Esher on the 27th.

Other long-leggedy beasties[]

The rare birds report also says that record numbers of Great Egret are now breeding in Britain — although again not apparently in the London area. But birds were seen at Fairlop Waters, Swanscombe Marsh and Richmond Park (twice) this month. And in the latter part of the month Bittern were reported from London Wetland Centre and Fisher's Green.

Honkers and quackers[]

As if we don’t already have too many invasive waterfowl, feral Barnacle Goose are increasingly making their presence felt in the London area. A flock of 26 was reported on the 9th in the Fisher's Green area, where the species has bred occasionally in the past. What will be next? Maybe plastic Bar-headed Goose, which are already established in East Anglia.

Genuinely wild anatids this month include six Goosander at King George V Reservoir on the 12th — the first recorded in London since mid-April. Another was on the Thames at Rainham on the 22nd. Juvenile Goldeneye were seen at Wimbledon Common (22nd) and Grovelands Park (22nd to 28th).

On the 9th, two Garganey were at King George V Reservoir, from where six Common Scoter could be also seen on the neighbouring William Girling Reservoir.

Waders[]

A grounded Woodcock found in Battersea on the 9th was later released after recovery. Another was seen at dusk over Bushy Park on the 25th.

Jack Snipe began their return to London, with sightings of one or two birds at Wanstead Flats, Wimbledon Common, Crossness and Richmond Park.

The juvenile Pectoral Sandpiper seen at London Wetland Centre from 12th to 29th September did not linger into October, but there was a brief sighting of this species at RSPB Rainham Marshes on the 8th.

A Golden Plover was sound recorded over an Ealing garden in the early hours of the 15th. A Grey Plover crossed Hampstead Heath on the same day and a Spotted Redshank flew over London Wetland Centre on the 23rd.

Winter thrushes[]

The middle of the month saw a massive passage of Redwing, with the 13th offering the most spectacular numbers: two dozen sightings were reported for that day, and they included more than 8,000 birds counted over Richmond Park and more than 4,000 over Totteridge Valley.

In contrast, Fieldfare were seen in much smaller numbers than usual for October. The first record was of 38 through Totteridge Valley on the 13th, after which there were only seven further reports, with a maximum count of 10 birds. (In contrast, October 2020 had 88 sightings, with counts as high as 350.)

And more . . .[]

  • The Wanstead Flats Black-necked Grebe, first reported early in May, was still present until 28th October.
  • A Merlin seen at Wanstead Flats on the 13th was the most notable raptor this month.
  • Gulls seen at Grovelands Park during the month included a returning Norwegian-ringed Common Gull, previously seen in December 2020, and a first-winter Black-headed Gull ringed in Poland. BHGs seen at Forty Hall CP included returning birds ringed in the Netherlands and Russia.
  • Firecrest were recorded from more than a dozen sites. Most notable was Oxleas Wood, where sightings throughout the month involved up to five birds.
  • A Dartford Warbler at RSPB Rainham Marshes from the 15th onwards was the first of the season for London. Another was recorded on Wimbledon Common (24th, 25th), but none have yet turned up at Richmond Park, their usual winter stronghold in the London area.
  • The first Yellow-browed Warbler of the winter was reported from a Crystal Palace garden on the 17th. Another was heard at Walthamstow Marshes on the 24th.
