Birds of Rainham Marshes
This annotated checklist is the definitive list of all bird species ever recorded at Rainham Marshes. The current total is 273 species (as at December 2025). This excludes Green-winged Teal, Hooded Crow and Mealy Redpoll all of which are now lumped.
The area covered includes the RSPB reserve and marshes/silt lagoons westwards to the Ingrebourne River, the landfill site and the Thames between Rainham and Purfleet. It does not include any land north of the railway line nor any birds seen from Rainham that were south of the Thames.
Rare birds are only included if they have been accepted by the relevant authority (BBRC or LNHS [annotated LBR where published in the London Bird Report]). Recent records of rarities may not have been considered yet and are marked as provisional. Some records of commoner birds are taken from other resources such as eBird; a series of papers on the Birds of Rainham Marshes published in the London Bird Reports (BRM); or The Birds of London (BOL) [Self, 2014].
