Bird of the Month: Pectoral Sandpiper[]

London has offered few rarities to entice twitchers since before the pandemic. I recall a Temminck’s Stint at Amwell NR for a week in August last year and a Ring-necked Duck at Holyfield Lake for a fortnight in April this year, but otherwise the more exciting birds have not hung around to be tickable — leaving tick-hunters ticked off.

But at last a rare vagrant has stayed long enough for any enthusiast to see it. This was the juvenile Pectoral Sandpiper that showed itself regularly at London Wetland Centre for 18 days, from the 12th to the 29th.

Although Pec Sand is now a near-annual vagrant in London, this bird is our first in three years. And it has distinguished itself by lingering longer than any previous Pec in London. It is part of an unusual influx into western Europe, with at least 80 birds recorded in the UK and Ireland this month.

(London’s first recorded Pec was shot at Brent Reservoir in 1846 but only came to light when its stuffed skin was sold as part of a taxidermy collection 45 years later. The next London sighting was not until 1950, but since then this scarce passage migrant from North America or Siberia has been recorded increasingly frequently in autumn. A major influx in 2003 brought more than 260 Pecs into Britain and Ireland, and records from half a dozen London sites in September that year include one unfortunate bird eaten by a Hobby.)

Other notable waders[]

Other water-loving birds[]

  • Brent Reservoir’s intriguing Ruddy Shelduck, first seen on 5th Aug, remained there throughout September.
  • Also at Brent Reservoir, the Garganey first reported on 28th Aug hung around until 13th Sep, while the bird first seen at London Wetland Centre on 22nd Aug was still there until 27th Sep. A Garg was also reported at RSPB Rye Meads on the 20th.
  • A Common Scoter was briefly at Walthamstow Wetlands on the 1st.
  • The Wanstead Flats Black-necked Grebe — first reported as long ago as early May — was still present at least until 27th Sep.
  • A juvenile Gannet was at Hilfield Park Reservoir on the afternoon of the 26th and one was seen on the same day at Wanstead Flats (perhaps the same bird — but difficult to tell because the time of observation at Wanstead was not recorded on this wiki).
  • RSPB Rainham Marshes was the go-to site for pelecaniforms throughout September, when on various dates it hosted one or two Cattle Egret, up to three Great (White) Egret and up to 36 Little (white) Egret. On the 17th a Spoonbill was also present. And London’s first Bittern since mid-March was recorded just across the Thames at Crossness on the 1st.
  • A Great Skua was seen on the Thames at Swanscombe Marshes on the 4th.
  • A few Little Gull, Arctic Tern, Black Tern and Sandwich Tern passed through London early in the month. On the 14th an impressive flock of more than 100 Sandwich Tern hung around the Thames Barrier for half an hour or so before moving on.
  • A Guillemot was seen on the Thames at West Thurrock on the 18th, and a Puffin was reported flying over London Wetland Centre on the 23rd.

Birds of prey[]

  • September being peak month for passage Common Buzzard, there were plenty of records this month, most notably 23 birds in a single movement over Wanstead Flats on the 6th — apparently equalling the London record.
  • Rarer raptors included a Honey Buzzard east over RSPB Rainham Marshes on the 3rd and another circling over Greenford on the 5th.
  • A Goshawk soared over Crystal Palace on the 4th.

Near-passerines[]

  • A Wryneck was reported at Harold Hill on the 3rd and another at Wanstead Flats from the 4th to the 6th — in a week when at least 125 were logged at various sites across Britain. (Over recent years, Wanstead Flats has been a popular site for Wryneck, with records in 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2015 that may well all have involved the same bird annually taking a few days’ break from its migration. Since the lifespan of the species is only 5–10 years, this year’s visitor is likely to be a different bird.)

Passerines[]

  • Wanstead Flats had a great day for passage passerines on the 5th, with no fewer than two Spotted Flycatcher, four Pied Flycatcher, two Common Redstart, four Whinchat, two Stonechat, four Wheatear, eight Yellow Wagtail and a Tree Pipit. But the record sighting for Yellow Wagtail this month was the 29 counted in Totteridge Valley’s Cow Field on the 15th.
  • A Firecrest in Sidcup on the 7th was the first London record since 10th May. Further sightings came later in the month at Totteridge Valley, Oxleas Wood, Petts Wood and Greenwich Park.
  • A Fieldfare at Woolwich Common on the 23rd was the autumn’s first (but still more than a month later than London’s earliest record, at Brent Reservoir on 19th Aug 1984).
  • Two Black Redstart were seen at Guildhall on the 13th and 20th.
